Lamphey Park

Setting

Lamphey Park is situated within the historic deer park for the Bishop’s Palace. We are a mile outside Lamphey village, situated on rising ground ¼ mile from the ‘Ridgeway’. We are surrounded by farm land with magnificent views towards the coast and towards Pembroke town.

We have eight acres of our own land which includes our garden, three paddocks, and the old walled garden. The garden provides space to walk and relax, with some secluded areas under the old oak trees. Landscaping is still in progress and we are planning to create a games lawn for croquet, tennis, etc. The paddocks are home to a small flock of Jacobs sheep and horses, and ducks and chickens are kept in the old the walled garden.

History

Lamphey Park house is situated within what was formerly the deer park of the Bishop’s Palace at Lamphey, established in the 13th century as a magnificent retreat where the Bishop could combine the life of a prelate with that of a country gentleman. During the reformation, the church lands at Lamphey were alienated by Henry VIII and granted to the Devereux family (Later Earls of Essex), and were subsequently sold to Sir Hugh Owen of Orielton in 1683.  By this time the palace was no longer lived in and had fallen into disrepair; the buildings and land were converted to agricultural use.

The earliest recorded history of Lamphey Park house is lease of 1814 which describes Lamphey Park as a ‘new built’ house, and it was occupied as a ‘gentleman’s residence up to the end of the 19th century. However, the origins of the house are much older and they probably date back to the early 18th century and the conversion of the deer park to agricultural use. At some time the house was allegedly an orphanage (and there is some evidence to support this) but the early history of the house is lost.

At the end of the 19th century the house became a farm (The James family were tenant farmers at Lamphey Park for 57 years).  However, the rent paid to the Lamphey Estate was insufficient to maintain the house and it gradually deteriorated. By 1960 the house was in a serious state of disrepair; was no longer habitable, was no longer safe, and it was abandoned. Fortunately, Lamphey Park was restored in 1994 and once again became a private home. We purchased it from the Lamphey estate in 2003, converting it into a guest house.

Lamphey Park is a house with a past – not always a good one – but it now has a bright future.

Animals

The paddocks at Lamphey Park are home to a small flock of Jacobs sheep and a Shetland Pony called ‘Tom Kitten’. In the summer we often ‘borrow’ some cattle to help keep the grass trimmed.
Part of the old walled garden is used for keeping poultry and there are currently geese, ducks and chickens in residence.
Guests are welcome to make the acquaintance of all these creatures.

Environmental

Old houses are notoriously difficult and expensive to heat! We have installed a wood burning central heating stove and a ground-source heat pump which will provide most of the heating for the house. It will also heat two of our self-catering cottages - the ‘Old Bakehouse’ and the ‘Bathhouse’. This significantly reduces our fuel bills and carbon emissions.
