Lamphey Park - Local Area

Beaches and Coastal Footpath

We are situated on a beautiful stretch of the South Pembrokeshire coast with some of the finest beaches in Europe. Large sections of the coastline are owned and preserved by the National Trust.

There are beaches to suit every taste:

  • Freshwater East - our local beach – has easy access, soft sand and all the facilities needed by families and young children;
  • Barafundle is regularly voted ‘Best beach in Britain’ is approximately five miles away. It is a short walk along the coastal footpath from Stackpole Quay.

  • Swan Lake Bay is also reached via the coastal footpath and provides a more secluded and peaceful atmosphere;
  • Broadhaven can be reached from the National Trust car park, or on foot via the Bosherston lily ponds to provide a special day out.
  • Freshwater West is a magnificent stretch of sand facing the Atlantic Ocean, and can be awesome on a wild day.

The coastal footpath runs the entire length of the Pembrokeshire coast. Some sections are easy suiting families and children, but some sections can be more demanding. All are rewarding!

Historic Sites

Bishops Palace.

The Bishops Palace at Lamphey was built as a country retreat for the Bishops of St Davids. It is now a splendid ruin and is often used for drama and other outdoor events in the summer months. Lamphey Park is situated within the palace’s historic deer park.

Castles.
Lower Lamphey Park is close to some of the finest castles in South Wales. The magnificent castle at Pembroke was the birthplace of King Henry VII and is one of the finest and best preserved Norman castles in Britain.

Carew castle has a beautiful setting overlooking an arm of the Cleddau estuary. It was home to the beautiful Welsh princess Nest.

Manorbier castle has a coastal setting and was the birthplace of the XII Century chronicler Giraldus Cambrensis who described it as the fairest place in all Wales Llawhaden castle which overlooks the Eastern Cleddau was also built by the bishops of St David’s as a fortified palace.

Cleddau Estuary

The Cleddau estuary is sometimes called the hidden gem of Pembrokeshire. Its charm may be enjoyed by taking one of the many walks along the riverside, or in a more leisurely by taking a river trip.
The Creselly Arms situated at Creswell Quay is one of the few remaining traditional pubs and it supports a lively local trade.

Tenby
Tenby is a historic port still enclosed by its old town walls. Now it is a bustling resort town with two magnificent beaches and all the amenities one would expect in a holiday centre.

St David’s
St David’s – Britain’s smallest city – is 25 miles (40Km) from Lamphey Park and is one of the earliest Christian centres in the UK. In medieval times, the cathedral and St David’s shrine was a place of pilgrimage, and the Bishop was a man of great wealth, power and prestige. Today one can visit the cathedral and the ruins of the bishop’s palace; the bleak rocky coastline of St David’s head contrasts with the soft sandy beaches around Lamphey.

Places to Eat
Lamphey village – a mile from Lamphey Park House – has some excellent places to eat:

  • The Dial Inn – is a pub-restaurant with an excellent lunch and dinner menu
  • The Lamphey Hall Hotel - has a stylish bistro-style restaurant, just right for a special occasion
  • The Lantern - is more informal but offers excellent home cooked lunches and evening meals.
The Waterman’s Arms and the Old King’s Arms in Pembroke provide excellent pub meals; and there are two excellent Fish n Chip shops. In fact we are spoilt for choice!

We are happy to provide a taxi service to/from Lamphey village to help you enjoy your evening meal.
